CM Dr. Sarma announces Rs 800 crore investment for roads in tea gardens

Staff Reporter, Guwahati, June 12: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a major investment of Rs 800 crore for the construction of 800 roads in tea garden areas. Each tea garden will receive Rs 1 crore for road construction this year, marking a significant step in improving infrastructure in these regions. The state government sanctioned the funds during a cabinet meeting today, emphasizing the ongoing commitment to enhancing tea garden roads annually. In a parallel initiative, CM Sarma also revealed plans to modernize and renovate 500 Assamese medium schools. As part of his Independence Day pledge, the government has been building 126 schools each year, with an investment of Rs 7.5-8 crore each. To date, 252 schools are under renovation, and today’s sanction includes work for an additional 126 schools, bringing the total to 326. By next year, the goal of modernizing 500 schools is expected to be achieved, providing existing schools with new, modern infrastructure. In addition to infrastructure improvements, the Chief Minister introduced 'Nijut Moina,' a new educational scheme aimed at reducing early marriages and promoting higher education among girl students. Under this scheme, girl students enrolling in classes 11 and 12 will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 1000, those pursuing graduation will receive Rs 1250, and postgraduate students will get Rs 2500 per month. The stipends will be transferred on the 11th of every month, helping to alleviate economic burdens on families and encouraging girls to continue their education. The initiative is expected to increase enrollment ratios in higher educational institutions, building on the success of a previous scheme where the government provided scooters to girls achieving first division, which significantly boosted academic performance. The 'Nijut Moina' scheme is projected to require an annual budget of approximately Rs 300-350 crore, with potential to rise to Rs 1500 crore as more students benefit from the program.
