Wounded stork rescued at Sootea

Staff Reporter, Biswanath Chariali, August 4: An injured stork commonly known as Lesser Adjutant Stork which sustained a severe injury on one of legs while coming in contact with high voltage wire of Powergrid was spotted by two youths from Polosoni village of Sootea today. On getting information, Uttam Kumar Nath, local journalist and an environment worker immediately took the injured bird to Sootea State Veterinary Hospital for primary treatment. After treatment, the injured bird was handed over to Biswanath Wildlife Department. The bird which is commonly known as Lesser Adjutant Stork has been categorised as a vulnerable species by the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The scientific name of the stork is Leptoptilos javanicus. The rare but going to be endangered species has been listed in the Red List category by IUCN.
