Nagaon, July 13: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nagaon organized a field day on millets promoted under millets promotion through R&D activities at Niz Khatowal near Samaguri in the district to showcase the crop and also make farmers aware of millets cultivation today here. Dr Niranjan Deka, principal scientist and head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nagaon encouraged the farmers with his valuable information about millets and asked the participants to go for dissemination of seeds to fellow farmers in the upcoming season. Informing solid data on millets as well as the importance of its value addition due to its high nutritional value, Dr Deka urged the farmers to cover more crop areas with cultivation of millet varieties. Over 25 farmers of the area participated in the programme today. Keshab Bora, agriculture inspector, Rupahi ADO circle, Monika Hira, Gram Pradhan of Niz Khatowal and scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nagaon attended the programme. The programmes under millets promotion are being conducted either by its own or with other line departments like district agriculture department, NABARD or through mass media so as to make people aware of tremendous benefits of the millets and its consumption. In a press note issued by KVK, Nagaon it's asserted that millets were supposed earlier as the part of Assamese ethnic cuisine and in due course of time as well as shifting agricultural trends, the cultivation of millets were declined in the country although it has numerous health benefits including helping to lower the risk of high blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Keeping in view of health benefits from millets and the global demand of millets among the people, government of India proposed the United Nations for declaring the current year as International year of millets to improve nutrition, increase farmers' income, enhance productivities and promote crop diversification so well, the press note stated further here.
