Guwahati, July 20: Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria attended the 9th Krishna Kanta Handiqui Memorial lecture, a commemoration of the birth anniversary of the legendary Indologist and scholar, KK Handiqui at the city campus of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University at Khanapara in Guwahati today. During his address, the Governor expressed that Krishna Kanta Handiqui was an erudite scholar, a veritable treasure for the land of Assam. Through his profound knowledge and wisdom, he bequeathed a legacy that everybody should strive to uphold in the days to come. Handiqui's command over language was remarkable, and his writings stand as a proud testament to the vibrant culture of Assam. The establishment of Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOU) in his name and honor serves as a fitting tribute to the indologist's contribution. However, the noble purpose of the lecture program today can only be fully realized when everybody collectively comprehends his contributions and endeavors to integrate his teachings into the society. He also said, as the First Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University, Krishna Kanta Handiqui opened the doors of knowledge dissemination not only for Assam but for the entire North East region. The Governor also emphasized that the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education in the state lags behind, and KKHSOU should proactively address this issue.
Being the sole open university in the state, its responsibility must extend beyond educating only those who have enrolled, but reaching out to those who have been unable to do so for various reasons. KKHSOU should act as a platform to provide education to those who have been left out of the enrollment process. The Governor also expressed his appreciation for the state's significant achievement in allowing students to obtain two degrees from the open university, acknowledging its positive impact in the days ahead. VC KKHSOU, Dr Rajendra Prasad Das, VC Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences, Dr Dhurbajyoti Borah, VC Vardhaman Mahaveer Open University, Rajasthan, Dr Kailash Sodani, Entrepreneur, Abhijeet Baruah and all the deans and faculty members of the KKHSOU were present.
