Guwahati, June 28: The North East Students Organisation (NESO), an apex body of eight students’ associations of seven northeastern states, conducted candlelight vigils in all state capitals of the northeast on June 28 in solidarity with the people of Manipur. NESO Chairman Samuel B. Jyrwa called for immediate steps to restore normalcy in strife-torn Manipur. The NESO also accused the Center and the Manipur Government of failing to tackle the situation. The NESO earlier condemned the Manipur government’s action evicting the indigenous settlers belonging to the Zo community and the violent incidents that followed. It is to be mentioned that, nearly two months after it was convulsed by ethnic violence, Manipur is teetering on what many believe is the brink of a civil war. Clashes between the majority Meitei and Kuki communities have left more than 100 dead and over 400 wounded. Moreover 60,000 people have been displaced and taken shelter in some 350 camps.
