Guwahati, September 16: Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi said that education is the crucial driver of socio-economic development and creation of sustainable livelihood and happiness. Attending the 9th Convocation of Assam down town University at the university campus here today, the Governor said that the education system needs to continually address the diversification in the rapidly changing professional ecosystem while being an important tool for sustainable livelihood. He said that the National Education Policy which envisages to develop good human beings capable of rational thought and action, possessing compassion and empathy, scientific temper and creative imagination, with sound ethical moorings and values, should be assiduously implemented by educational institutions of the country. He expressed satisfaction that Assam Down Town University in keeping the spirit of the NEP, is in the process of restructuring its curriculum encompassing flexibility with choice based course structure in order to provide scope and freedom to learners to acquire specialized knowledge. While congratulating the graduating students and extending his gratitude to the proud parents, the Governor appreciated Assam Down Town University’s contribution to churning out intellectual minds and creating the much-needed quality in human resources in various fields. He told the students that acquiring their degrees was not the end of their journey, in fact, it is just the beginning. He further advised them that their contributions will be judged and their efforts will be appreciated when they can serve society at large. “Words mean nothing unless followed by action,” the Governor added. It may be mentioned that a total of 1300 students and scholars have graduated, of which 1063 are undergraduates, 299 are Post Graduates, and 12 PhD degrees have been awarded. The program also witnessed the conferment of gold medals to the best graduate - Lunasmrita Saikia, and postgraduate - Shiny Ahmed. The appreciation award for the best placement recipient went to Shatakshi Chakraborty, and the Assam Down Town University Alumni Award for Inspiring Achievement was received by Farzana Afreen. D. Litt (Honoris Causa) was presented to Chiranjit Chaliha, Prominent Industrialist, Dinesh Shahra, Eminent Entrepreneur & Industrialist, and Prof. CA (Dr) M.S. Jadav, Noted Chartered Accountant. Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu was also present on the occasion and also presented accolades to the graduates. Dr Shekhar C. Mande, Former Director General CSIR, New Delhi, graced the occasion along with the Chancellor of Assam Down Town University, Dr N. N. Dutta, Vice-Chancellor, Dr N.C. Talukdar, along with dignitaries of the university, faculty members, students and their parents.
