Guwahati, August 14: More than 2000 residential students of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) have taken part in the “Azadi March” organized on the occasion of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav at the University campus today. A week-long programme has commenced since August 9 last at USTM for the celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. Dr Abdulaziz Al Musallam, Chairman of Sharjah Institute for Heritage, UAE will hoist the National Flag as the chief guest on the occasion of the 76th Independence Day at the main sports ground of USTM tomorrow. A colourful Cultural Procession and Cultural Showcase of NE India will be held tomorrow at Central Auditorium of the university. A Special Convocation will also be held on the occasion. Along with the whole nation, USTM is celebrating the 75th year of India’s Independence and the tri-colour is flying high everywhere in and around the campus raising Patriotic Spirit amongst the thousands of students and each and every member of the University family. On August 12 a large group of students, including 7 Units of NSS Cell, organised a bike rally for distribution of National Flags amidst villagers within 5 kms radius of the University to materialize the dream of “Har Ghar Tiranga, Har Ghar Shiksha”. Meanwhile, different Departments of the USTM have been celebrating the grand occasion under their departmental initiatives. For instance, the department of Rural Development has visited a Rehabilitation Center at Shantivan Nongpoh and did an awareness programme on health and hygiene and distributed sanitary items like soap, handwash, sanitizers and sanitary pads to promote the habit of cleanliness and healthy lifestyle. They also visited District Jail, Ri-Bhoi and organized a workshop on skill-based courses for jail inmates, and distributed national flags and light refreshments. Today they visited District Civil Hospital and did an awareness drive about post-natal health among the mothers in the hospital. The Department of Earth Science distributed free School kits to the needy school children at Noksikgittim Village of Ri-bhoi District. Tiranga distribution was also done in the same village to children and parents. The department also organised a free health check-up for the children of the village. Likewise, the other departments of USTM are also observing the week-long celebration raising the spirit of patriotism.
